Definition
WordPress is a free, open source content management system (CMS). About 50% of all websites are powered by WordPress as a CMS, making it the market leader worldwide. The advantages of WordPress are its great user-friendliness and customizability. Through many predefined functions, even laymen can create websites with WordPress and populate them with content. To insert texts, pictures, videos etc., no HTML knowledge is necessary.

How does WordPress work?
WordPress allows you, the user, to create a site with a building block system. In the admin area you can control the different settings and functions of the website. Also the prefabricated building blocks, in order to insert and administer contents or in order to adapt the Design, are here.
Initially, WordPress saves the content independently of the selected design, allowing changes to the appearance of the page without the user having to readjust the content. There are countless free and paid WordPress designs (templates/themes). Because WordPress programming allows for further customization, there is no limit to the webmaster’s creativity.
Installing plug-ins and extensions
You can extend the functions of WordPress with plug-ins. There is one method that is particularly interesting for laymen. It allows the automatic installation of such an extension. To do this, you can simply search for the desired plug-in in the admin area and then install and activate it with a single mouse click.
Another option is to install a plug-in manually. Here you only have to upload a .zip file in the dashboard, which then installs itself. With a click on the corresponding button, the webmaster then activates the plug-in.
An example of a well-known plug-in would be Yoast SEO – This plug-in is used to see the search engine optimization of a website and the individual subpages at a glance.
WordPress in itself is a free CMS, but depending on the plug-in or extension, there may be a cost here. Basically, however, in most cases with a little research effort, you can find a free alternative for the respective plug-in.With WordPress, you can use a CMS for free that offers you an incredible number of customization options. In addition, the large user community guarantees you fast support if you encounter any problems.
Conclusion
WordPress is the most widely used CMS. It is open source and therefore free of charge – in addition, there are countless plug-ins that really bring out the possibilities of the modular system. Depending on the plug-ins and their extension, costs can only arise here for the webmaster.
It is structured in such a way that laymen with no previous experience in website design or even knowledge of HTML can easily understand and use it.
